Meeting for parents and children of the Confirmation Class of 2020

On Sunday, May 5, Parents and 5th graders are encouraged to attend an informational meeting in Grundy Hall at 9:45 a.m. The meeting will give details and information about the 6th grade Confirmation year that will begin August 18, 2019. Parents, please bring your calendars and the $30 class fee for Confirmation.

March 10 and 17 are special days in Sunday School

March 10 will be our second Buddy Sunday in this school year. Buddy Sunday is a time when older and younger children get to meet each other and begin to build recognition and  community through prayer and sharing a Bible story together. Our goal for this day is for older children to act as mentors to the younger children and for younger children to meet older children to include in their faith community.

We invite  the children to pray for each other during the week following Buddy Sunday. Children will bring home a Buddy Book which names their new church friend.

March 17 will be a Day of Service. Children will gather in age-level groups to learn what the Kingdom of Heaven is like and do service projects for others.

  • Faith, Love and Grace will meet together in CW 115
  • Grades 1-3 will meet in Grundy Hall
  • Grades 4-6 will gather in Courtenay Lounge for Donuts and Dialogue with the Confirmation journey leaders then do their service project

5th grade retreat- January 26, 2019

Fifth graders and their leaders will gather on Saturday January 26 for an all-day retreat. This is a special day in which we hope all fifth graders will join us. Our time together will include serving at Preston Taylor, and fellowship with each other as we play together. We invite families to come eat and worship with us at 5 p.m. on Saturday to conclude the retreat.

On Sunday, January 27 the retreat continues as fifth graders and their leaders (and any family members who wish to join us) worship at the Downtown Presbyterian Church. This trip is part of the fifth grade study of the early church and a visit to the sanctuary where First Presbyterian Church began is a great compliment to the Sunday School sessions. We will return to FPC to eat together following worship and a tour.

August 19 – The Journey to Confirmation Continues

The 5th grade year builds on the Old Testament foundation laid during the 4th grade year at First Presbyterian Church!   During the 5th grade year, we nudge our young people towards claiming the faith as their own.   We gently place more and more responsibility on  for reading the Bible, praying (even outloud), attending worship, and other practices that form our faith

The year will be filled with studying the New Testament in what is called a “survey” mode, or an overview of the stories, so that God’s plan and story line is emphasized more than single-story exploration.   The leaders will use an approach called “problem-based learning” to engage young minds in critical thinking, a necessary skill with Scripture as they move towards making their own profession of faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

The year will also be filled with intentional gatherings so that our young people can form new friendships and deepen old friendships in their group.   Watch for details as leaders will set up times for the 4th grade group to worship-together-as-a-class, join together for their Milestone Retreat, and much more.

Confirmation Orientation Meeting for 5th graders and their parents

May 13 at 9:45-10:45 in Grundy Hall

Parents will join with their current 5th grader to meet and talk with Garry Latimer, who will be the Team Leader for the Confirmation class next year, and Deb O’Brien, Director of Ministry with Children and their families.

Information shared at  the meeting will include:

  • Vision and values for the coming year
  • Key dates
  • Introduction of the leadership team
  • Some get acquainted activities
  • a chance to ask questions

Please bring $30 to cover the participation fee that covers events/food for the fellowship events that are an integral part of the year.

Confirmation is the culmination of all the nurture and faith formation that has taken place since your child was born. It is the time when children have reached an age where they can profess their faith in Jesus Christ as their own-apart from their parent’s and take on the privileges  and responsibilities of full church membership here at First Presbyterian Church.

Questions, please contact Deb O’Brien at [email protected] or 615-298-9582
