Serving at the Salvation Army

Click to let us know if your Confirmand will or will not participate: and complete the permission slip.

The class will work at the warehouse on December 9 assisting the Salvation Army with organizing the thousands of gifts that pour into the warehouse.  We will deliver the gifts from each small group at this time, too.  This has proven to be a very meaningful and worthwhile opportunity to share, care, and help others during this significant time of the year – preparing to welcome the Christ Child.

•          We meet at FPC at 2:30pm (parking lot by Dining Hall)
•          Work from 3:00-5:00 and
•          return to FPC by 5:30 pm (to same parking lot)
•          Transportation is provided by small group leaders
•          The warehouse is at 1530 Antioch Pk., Nashville 37013
·                Dress warmly; the warehouse is cool.
·                Remember to bring your Angel’s gifts to class or bring them with you on the 9th

Confirmation Journey includes Covenant of Service

Early in the Sunday School year, our fourth, fifth and sixth graders are asked to consider how they will serve our church and community as part of their covenant of service during their confirmation journey. They may serve in a variety of ways and often find a unique serving opportunity based on their interests.

One way these pre-teens can serve is as a Junior VIP helper in Young Children and Worship or a Junior VIP Nursery helper. They can also serve as a Baptism Buddy, reading the scripture or prayer during a child’s baptism. Another way of serving is to pray for the leaders of our church; the deacons, elders and pastors. What a powerful image it is that our young members are praying for the leaders of our faith community.

These fourth, fifth and sixth graders are learning the meaning of service through stewardship in unique and meaningful ways.

Heard from one junior helper:

“I have always really loved working with young children, and it is something I look forward to when I am at church.  I have been taught from a young age to serve others, and this is a great way to do it.   There are many older church members that have impacted my life, and I would love to have the same affect on the nursery aged children.”

October 15 to be a Day of Service during the Sunday School hour

On Sunday, October 15, Sunday School groups will meet together to work on age appropriate service projects. One group will assemble our hygiene kits for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. Other groups will have other service projects for the community and our church including helping with preparations for our family Advent Devotions. Join us on this day as we service the Lord with joy-filled hearts.

Moon, Faith, Love and Grace (ages 3-6) will meet in CW 111

Grades 1-3 will meet in The Computer Lab- CC 140

Grades 4-6 will meet in Grundy Hall.

Sneak Preview of Youth Group

The Youth ministry is hosting a Sneak Preview for the Confirmation Class this Sunday, May 7, during the Sunday School hour (9:45-10:45 A.M.).   The Confirmation Class will join with the youth for food, fellowship, and a short devotional in the Gathering Place. Confirmands will be paired with a high school “buddy” to walk around, play games, and answer any questions they might have about the youth group. We will also take a class picture and introduce them to the volunteers who will be teaching them in Sunday school, leading their small groups, etc. next year.

At the end of the Sunday school hour, confirmands will worship as a class in the front pews with their Small Group Leaders and the rest of the youth group.  They will travel directly from The Gathering Place to the Sanctuary with their leaders (as they did this past week).

Covenant of Service Opportunities

During our Sunday morning group time, your tween has been exploring their own God-given spiritual gifts, and they’re discovering ways to use those gifts to serve in God’s kingdom. See below for more information about opportunities to use their gifts here within our church!

  1. YC&W Helper

Young Children & Worship (YC&W) is a ministry that helps 4, 5 and 6 year olds smoothly transition from the nursery to worship in the Sanctuary during the 8:30 and 11:00 services. Tweens are invited to help assist the leaders as needed. Click to sign up as YC&W Helper.

  1. Junior Nursery Helper

As a Junior Nursery Helper, your tween will get to love on the littlest in our midst by reading them a story during either the 8:30 or 11:00 service.  Click to sign up as a Junior Nursery Helper.

  1. Serving Together

Each grade level (1st – 6th) has been assigned a ministry partnership through their Sunday school group, but families and tweens are welcome to donate to or volunteer with any agency.  There are no Serving Together events on the calendar this spring, however, 4th-6th graders have an opportunity to work with several agencies through Mission Camp this summer. Click here for more information about Mission Camp.

  1. Baptism Buddy

Baptism Buddies stand alongside a family and pray for their baby (or child) as they are baptized during the worship service.  We have provided your tween’s name to Susan Kirby, who will contact you as opportunities arise.  If you have questions or would like to contact Susan, you may do so at [email protected] or 615-298-9540.

  1. Doxology Choir

The Doxology Choir sings during several worship services during the year.  Practices are held on Sunday afternoons and select Wednesday evenings at the church, and are part of an integrated program of music and spiritual formation.  If your tween is interested, you can sign up online or contact Jerry Monds with any questions ([email protected]).

  1. Pray for Leadership

Prayer is a wonderful gift and powerful tool.  Tweens interested in praying for our Church leadership will receive a pictorial directory of the Elders and Deacons.

  1. Contribute to the Offering

If your tween has indicated to their Sunday school teachers (or if they indicate this in the future) that they would like to contribute to the church offering regularly, we will happily provide them with a set of offering envelopes.  If you need additional envelopes, they are available at the Children’s Hospitality Desk.

Confirmation Class 2017 Weekend Retreat

The Confirmation Class of 2017 traveled to NaCoMe, the Presbyterian Church camp for a weekend in February. There they worshiped together, played together and wrote their personal statements of faith. Free time was spent on a scavenger hunt, human foosball, campfire and s’more eating as well as the traditional jalapeno eating contest. Heard at the end of the retreat: “Ms. Deb, can we stay another day? This is the nicest camp I’ve ever been to.”

Ways your Tween can make a meaningful contribution within our church

As tweens explore their own God-given spiritual gifts, discovering ways to use those gifts to serve in God’s kingdom, we encourage them to put their faith into concrete action within the FPC community. Some ways your child may choose to serve at FPC:
