Buddy Sunday – Dec. 3, 2017

On Dec 3, the older children visited the young groups of Sunday School. They shared a scripture then were paired up with a buddy to talk about the scripture and get to know each other. Great things happened when young children and older children met. Older children found the role of buddy leader to be fun to fulfill. Younger children were pleased to have the attention of an older child. Each child now has the name of another child to pray for and look for on Sunday mornings.

Upcoming Group activities

We have several community building opportunities coming in the next several months, so please mark your calendars!

Worship as a Class:  Sunday, Dec 10 8:30 a.m.

Worship together is a vital part of our faith.  It unites our hearts with God and with others in powerful ways.  We believe having the class worship together occasionally in the year ahead will help create a stronger relationship between our tweens and their leaders.  We will reserve pews and the class leaders and 5th graders will sit together for the service.

5th Grade Milestone Retreat:  Saturday, January 27, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The day is filled with activities centered on experiencing the 6 Great Ends of the Church, a trip to Preston Taylor Ministries to serve with the children there, and then parents are invited to join for dinner and a brief worship time that the kids will lead.

Serving Together at Preston Taylor Ministry: Sunday, March 11, 1-3 p.m. at FPC

A variety of opportunities will be provided for your family to serve in the local Nashville community through “Serving Together”  We strongly encourage your family to take advantage of these opportunities; tweens are empowered when they experience making a difference for others in the world.

Worship at Downtown Presbyterian Church:  Sunday, April 22, 9:45 a.m. -1:30 p.m.

The class will take a field trip to worship at Downtown Presbyterian Church and enjoy lunch after the service.

Confirmation Journey includes Covenant of Service

Early in the Sunday School year, our fourth, fifth and sixth graders are asked to consider how they will serve our church and community as part of their covenant of service during their confirmation journey. They may serve in a variety of ways and often find a unique serving opportunity based on their interests.

One way these pre-teens can serve is as a Junior VIP helper in Young Children and Worship or a Junior VIP Nursery helper. They can also serve as a Baptism Buddy, reading the scripture or prayer during a child’s baptism. Another way of serving is to pray for the leaders of our church; the deacons, elders and pastors. What a powerful image it is that our young members are praying for the leaders of our faith community.

These fourth, fifth and sixth graders are learning the meaning of service through stewardship in unique and meaningful ways.

Heard from one junior helper:

“I have always really loved working with young children, and it is something I look forward to when I am at church.  I have been taught from a young age to serve others, and this is a great way to do it.   There are many older church members that have impacted my life, and I would love to have the same affect on the nursery aged children.”

October 15 to be a Day of Service during the Sunday School hour

On Sunday, October 15, Sunday School groups will meet together to work on age appropriate service projects. One group will assemble our hygiene kits for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. Other groups will have other service projects for the community and our church including helping with preparations for our family Advent Devotions. Join us on this day as we service the Lord with joy-filled hearts.

Moon, Faith, Love and Grace (ages 3-6) will meet in CW 111

Grades 1-3 will meet in The Computer Lab- CC 140

Grades 4-6 will meet in Grundy Hall.

Kick-Off for Children’s Sunday School Groups is August 20

Welcome!   We hope the summer offered lots of opportunity to relax, travel, and renew.  We’re ready to begin our communities of belonging with our children each Sunday morning.  Groups age 3 through 6th grade study the Bible together and grow as disciples as they pray, serve, play, and care for each other.   Babies and toddlers have a fun time in our loving Nursery playing and hearing a Bible story, too.

The Sunday School hour for children is 9:45-10:45 A.M.   Families will receive an e-mail with their child’s group and room assignment prior to August 20.   We ask that parents escort their children to their group on this Kick-Off day and offer a hello/thanks to the great group of leaders who will be journeying with your child for the next 10 months.

Starting at 10:00 A.M. we are hosting a breakfast for parents in Courtenay Hall.   You’ll have time to visit with friends, make new friends, and enjoy Kim’s great cooking.

Relationships matter!

Faith is caught more than it is taught.

Confirmation Orientation Meeting for 5th graders and their parent(s)

Sunday, May 7 during the Sunday School hour (9:45-10:45 A.M.) in Grundy Hall

Parents will join with their current 5th grader to meet and talk with Garry Latimer, who is the Team Lead for the coming year, and Deb O’Brien, Director of Ministry with Children  & their Families.   We’ll share the Vision and Values for the coming year, Key Dates, introduce the Leadership Team, do some “get to know you” activities, and answer any questions you or your incoming Confirmand may have.

During the Confirmation year, we have a variety of fellowship events and food (that you’ll hear about);  the class participation fee of $30 goes directly to cover these events/food that are integral to the experience.    Please bring a $30 check made payable to First Presbyterian Church on Sunday.

Confirmation is the culmination of all the nurture and faith formation that has taken place since your child was born.  It is the time when children have reached an age where they can profess their faith in Jesus Christ as their own – apart from their parent’s – and take on the privileges and responsibilities of full church membership here at First Presbyterian Church.

We are excited to continue this journey with your Confirmand!  Please don’t hesitate to contact Deb O’Brien at (615) 298-9582 with any questions you may have.

Covenant of Service Opportunities

During our Sunday morning group time, your tween has been exploring their own God-given spiritual gifts, and they’re discovering ways to use those gifts to serve in God’s kingdom. See below for more information about opportunities to use their gifts here within our church!

  1. YC&W Helper

Young Children & Worship (YC&W) is a ministry that helps 4, 5 and 6 year olds smoothly transition from the nursery to worship in the Sanctuary during the 8:30 and 11:00 services. Tweens are invited to help assist the leaders as needed. Click to sign up as YC&W Helper.

  1. Junior Nursery Helper

As a Junior Nursery Helper, your tween will get to love on the littlest in our midst by reading them a story during either the 8:30 or 11:00 service.  Click to sign up as a Junior Nursery Helper.

  1. Serving Together

Each grade level (1st – 6th) has been assigned a ministry partnership through their Sunday school group, but families and tweens are welcome to donate to or volunteer with any agency.  There are no Serving Together events on the calendar this spring, however, 4th-6th graders have an opportunity to work with several agencies through Mission Camp this summer. Click here for more information about Mission Camp.

  1. Baptism Buddy

Baptism Buddies stand alongside a family and pray for their baby (or child) as they are baptized during the worship service.  We have provided your tween’s name to Susan Kirby, who will contact you as opportunities arise.  If you have questions or would like to contact Susan, you may do so at skirby@fpcnashville.org or 615-298-9540.

  1. Doxology Choir

The Doxology Choir sings during several worship services during the year.  Practices are held on Sunday afternoons and select Wednesday evenings at the church, and are part of an integrated program of music and spiritual formation.  If your tween is interested, you can sign up online or contact Jerry Monds with any questions (jmonds@fpcnashville.org).

  1. Pray for Leadership

Prayer is a wonderful gift and powerful tool.  Tweens interested in praying for our Church leadership will receive a pictorial directory of the Elders and Deacons.

  1. Contribute to the Offering

If your tween has indicated to their Sunday school teachers (or if they indicate this in the future) that they would like to contribute to the church offering regularly, we will happily provide them with a set of offering envelopes.  If you need additional envelopes, they are available at the Children’s Hospitality Desk.

Milestone Retreat builds community and strengthens faith.

On January 28 fifth graders of FPC met together to explore and practice the Six Great Ends of the church (proclaim the gospel, nurture fellowship, worship together, and share Gospel truth are a few of those Great Ends). The day was spent having fun together, worshiping, and making new friends. As part of the retreat, the tweens traveled to Preston Taylor Ministries to share lunch, read with new friends, and play games in the January sun. They also planned and led worship for their families following dinner.  Our fifth graders shared the gospel message as they wrote prayers of confession and shared what scripture meant to them.
